With the growing popularity of Twitter and other social networking sites, there is an increased emphasis on real-time search and it would appear that Bing has just fired a shot across the bow of Google in its attempt to market up-to-the-minute search.

Yesterday Bing announced it had partnered with Twitter and Federated Media to launch BingTweets – a service which allows users to get real-time results from Twitter along with more in-depth findings through Bing.

The site also shows the most popular topics being tweeted about at that moment, mirroring the Trending Topics feature on Twitter.

Whitney Burk, director of Bing, says the new site could increase the search engine optimization (SEO) for tweets.

"Many people share their thoughts on Twitter, and search engines don’t currently do a great job of capturing that real-time content," she wrote on the company blog. "We designed Bing to help you make faster, more informed decisions, and, since people often turn to real-time content to help them make decisions, BingTweets was a logical next step."

Real-time results appears to be the future of search and something Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of search product and user experience called "incredibly important" in a recent interview with the UK’s Guardian newspaper.
