Companies that are going through a website redesign need to maintain a focus on search engine optimization (SEO) throughout each step of the process.

That’s according to Rob Gardner who writes the Search Insider blog for

Gardner says that today the question is not "if" a company will redesign its website but "when." Throughout the redesign process, Gardner says search engine optimization (SEO) is key.

"The important thing to remember here is that search should be a key consideration at every stage of the process, whether it is selecting a provider, setting requirements, producing comps, coding or site deployment," he writes.

One of the suggestions Gardner makes is to set up a redirection plan for the redesign. He says to use a 301 redirect to point search engines to similar pages in the new site.

Gardner’s point of maintaining search engine optimization (SEO) during redesign was made clear recently during the changeover of the White House website after President Barack Obama took office last Tuesday. A Googlebomb which had linked former President George W. Bush to the search term "miserable failure" was now linking to Obama.
